Get to Know Tawney!
Tawney has been a part of the Flex Fam since 2015, but was actually one of Flex’s very first clients shortly after it opened in 2012. If her face looks familiar from outside the studio, it could be because she was a live television news reporter for ABC and CBS News! She now practices law full time and has since left the television world behind.
Tawney has spent most of her life in Chicago, but was born on an Army base in Frankfurt, Germany! Which, technically marked the first of many countries she’s traveled to-date. She recently went to four different countries (in one week) for her bachelorette party alone, and it’s not out of the ordinary for her to fly to London or Shanghai for a long weekend. When she’s not globe-trotting, her weekends are spent hanging in the West Loop with her fiance, Mike, who she is MARRYING THIS WEEKEND!! Help us wish them both a HUGE
You can catch Tawney teaching Tuesday evenings at 4:30p, 5:30p and 6:30p!
What was your first experience with Pilates?
I discovered Pilates after suffering a back injury as a competitive cheerleader in high school… it was one of the only forms of exercise I could safely do, and I haven’t stopped since.
What led you to becoming a Pilates instructor?
I’ve been a Flexie since the studio opened back in 2012 and wanted not only to deepen my own practice, but also inspire and motivate others to see and feel positive changes too. As an attorney and litigation consultant with a demanding schedule, teaching at Flex has become my zen.
Describe your teaching style.
Intense with a smile on top. I love a tough workout and I try to bring that intensity to my classes too.
What’s your favorite non-Pilates workout?
Strength training… I love squats and deadlifts, and Pilates is a great compliment to this. Strengthening my core in the studio helps my form and technique at the gym.
Favorite healthy eats in the city?
The Allis Cafe at Soho House has an all-day breakfast plate with smoked salmon, eggs and avocado; that’s my go-to. And I’m addicted to Little Goat’s honey greek yogurt with blueberry preserves.
Favorite indulgent eats in the city?
If I’m in the mood for a steak, I head to Mastro’s (and always throw in an Oysters Rockefeller and a dirty martini with blue cheese stuffed olives). For pizza, it’s Roots (with Quad cities-style crust). And anywhere with a good wine list!
What’s on your bucket list?
Hike Machu Picchu, pet tigers in Thailand, surf in New Zealand, skydive in Dubai …the list goes on and on!
